President's MessageMay 2006Dear Members, Students and Friends: The Colorado Association of Psychotherapists (CAP) is a professional organization which serves to: EDUCATE the public as to the effectiveness, dependability and affordability of unlicensed psychotherapy. PROTECT the public's right to choose from a wide variety of traditional and non-traditional therapeutic approaches. Through our lobbyist we continue to monitor laws that affect Psychotherapists. PROMOTE innovation in the field of psychotherapy. PROVIDE essential legal, theoretical and practical information and instruction to its members. Notes From the Mental Health Grievance Board: l. Phone Sessions: The Board discussed regulations for unlicensed psychotherapists doing phone sessions. These regulations don't really exist. There are some common sense guidelines that the Board recommends. a. Always make sure that you as the therapist and the client are alone during the call..this keeps confidentially in effect. b. Think it through and decide if the phone sessions are going to serve the needs of the client. c. You, as the psychotherapist, are governed by the guidelines of the state that you are working in. 2. Massage Therapists who also do psychotherapy: It must state in your Disclosure Statement that you do a blend of these different elements (you must not do massage and psychotherapy separately with the same client..that becomes a dual relationship). You also must give out the Disclosure Statement to anyone that you are going to be doing blended services with. 3. Hypnosis/Hypnotherapy/Hypnotism The Board looked at information compiled by Dr. Carol Jones C.Ht. and decided that all of the use of hypnosis by mental health practitioners is hypnotherapy in Colorado. The board does not recognize that hypnotism can exist and not be part of psychotherapy. 4. Questions about regulations governing record keeping for unlicensed psychotherapist can be found in the state rule #14 on the state site. If you have any questions email me..
